Trip to New York (with a little excursion into New England)

It is hard to believe that we have returned from our final big trip before leaving for France next month! We had a wonderful time in New York, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. God gave us more friends and prayer partners and we hope that more financial partners will come as a result of this trip as well. Here are some pictures from the trip.

Trip to Ohio, Spring 2009

God blessed us with a very enjoyable and safe two-week trip to Ohio. We were primarily in the northeastern corner near Cleveland and then down near Columbus. We were shown much kindness and love. We are thankful for the friends that we have made. Here is a brief pictorial summary.

Travels in New England, Part 3

We are now back in Spartanburg, SC, with the windows open, enjoying 70+ degree weather. It is hard to believe that less than a week ago we were up in Madawaska, Maine experiencing windchills of -19!

This was truly a wonderful trip. We traveled through two Canadian provinces, 15 states and the District of Columbia, putting more than 7,000 miles on our van. (By God's grace, with more than 217,000 miles, our Dodge Caravan is still running strong!) This trip was special in that we not only met many new friends, but got to reunite with many friends that had been made on our previous trips to New England.

Here is the final segment of pictures from this trip. As you will see, the trip ended with a very enjoyable stop in Wilmington, NC, and a trip to Papa and MeMa Pahnke's in Wake Forest, NC.

More travels in New England

Here are some more slides that take up where the others left off. We have weathered at least three significant snow storms. However, we are thankful to God that not one service has been canceled. Ironically, our home church in Spartanburg, S.C., did have to cancel their Sunday night services yesterday due to snow!

One of the true blessings of these travels are the friends that we have made. It is hard to express how enjoyable, encouraging and endearing some of these friendships have become to us.

Travels in PA, OH, MI, ON, NY, MA, RI, and NH

OK. We have been so many different places already on this trip that it would be a bit much to make an individual post of each place. So we have assembled a slideshow giving you the highlights of where we've been and who we have seen. We are grateful that God has kept our van running well (we're at 213,000+) and provided for all our needs. We have made many good memories and shared many good hours of fellowship with friends. We wish you could have joined us!

Slideshow: September in the Northeast

(Double-click on the slideshow to see it in a larger format.)

We returned on Wednesday from our last 2,500-mile trip. We had meetings in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Maryland. This trip also afforded us the opportunity to visit with family: Ruth's sister and her family in Berwick, Pennsylvania; Tim's sister and family in Stoughton, Massachusetts, along with their extra-special visitors--Tim's parents, who were in the States on a brief visit from France; and also Tim's Aunt Debbie and Uncle Phil Dierking of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania.

Another special treat on this trip was the opportunity to visit with Pastor John and Diane McKnight (Evangelical Methodist Church of Darlington, MD). Pastor McKnight was a former pastor of Cleveland Park Bible Church, and was greatly used of the Lord here in Spartanburg in the late '80s and early '90s. (Unfortunately, the picture we took of them must have been inadvertently deleted.)

Slideshow: Carolina Travels

It has been a special blessing to be based out of our home here in the parsonage of Cleveland Park Bible Church for the last month. Though during that time, we have only trekked across the parking lot to church three or four times. One of those visits afforded us the joy of hearing our future French co-workers, Michael and Liz Cole, present their burden for France to our home congregation. Having the doctoral work behind them, the Coles are now seeking to hit the road on full-time deputation. We all would appreciate your prayers for them to find open doors for services and that God would direct them to churches and individuals who would be able to partner with them in ministry.

We have been grateful for the opportunities to visit a number of churches in the Carolinas during this month, where we found many friends from the past. Among them was a visit to one of our more recent supporters, Grace Baptist Church of East Flat Rock, NC, (though I’m afraid we neglected to take any pictures to add to our slideshow!). We also visited Emmanuel Baptist of Mills River, NC, a church that has supported Tim’s parents since before he was born. A full Sunday in Goldsboro, NC, gave us a good excuse to visit my parents in Wake Forest, and another supporting church there: Friendship Baptist Church of Raleigh (alas! No pictures here either!). We thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday with the people of Trinity Baptist in Goldsboro, a church which we had visited as youth group chaperones in our newly-married days. The slideshow above will give you a little pictorial history of some of those recent travels.

Ordination Weekend

In spite of the sweltering heat (the mercury reached 99 on Saturday and 100 on Sunday), God gave us a special ordination weekend. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, 10 men gathered for 3 ½ hours of questioning. It was a humbling experience, but the men were very gracious and the time was truly beneficial.

The ordination service was held on Sunday, June 8, at 10:30 a.m.. Pastor Ken Casillas gave a special charge to the congregation, Phillip Dodd presented me with the ordination certificate, and Robert Hurst with a new Bible. A special highlight for me was to have my dad pray the ordination prayer from France via a telephone connection. (Dad and Mom were able to watch the service live through Skype.) It was also very special to have Bob Bixby, Jr., my brother and mentor, preach the charge to the ordainee.

The church prepared a lunch for everyone in attendance, and then we gathered again at 2:30 for us to give our “official” missionary presentation to our home church. We’d like to give a big thank you to all our family and friends who came from out of town to join us for the special occasion. And a big thank you to Cleveland Park Bible Church for your love, support and interest in our ministry. See below for a slideshow of the weekend.

Slideshow: Winter New England Trip, II

Here are a few shots of our final days in New England. I'm afraid we got a little lazy about pulling out the camera in churches during that last part of the trip, and most of these pics come from other parts of our travels. We promise to do better! We did have some great services, but you'll just have to imagine those with your mind's eye.

P.S. If you'd like to see the pictures enlarged, double-click on the image.

Georgia/Florida Trip

The Bixbys and Coles loaded up on January 12, 2008, for our first pre-field ministry trip. We enjoyed excellent services together in Hiram, Georgia, and Spring Hill and Naples, Florida. We were inspired and enthused by the trip and made all the more eager to get to France. We were blessed with gracious hosts, generous churches and 80+ degree weather in the middle of January. The Coles returned to Spartanburg from Naples, but the Bixbys stayed in Florida another week for services in Bradenton, Florida, returning on January 31st, after 2,240.5 miles.

Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy.
